"Curiosities
and history of Giomici"
Giomici, aside
from suggestive vistas, offers an ample panorama of the Chiascio valley and
the surrounding hillsides, on the N-E the “Monte della Dea” (the Mount
of the Goddess) where in the past a pagan temple and various tombs have been
discovered , in particular in a field that is called even today “il campo
del tesore” (treasure field).
Giomici
was a medieval fortification that both the Dukedom of Urbino and Perugia
claimed for their own. It belonged to the Municipal Government of Gubbio up
until 1930 and then passed over to Valfabbrica. There are still ruins of the
boundary wall and two towers upon one of which there is a memorial tablet
that relates some historical facts. Inside the walls there are some houses
and a little church with some recently restored frescoes dated between 1200
and 1600, a Della Robbia-style frame behind the altar and a very valuable
wooden ceiling. |
